Emergency Medical Training was formed by 3 Durham Region
Paramedics in 1989 and formally became a part of the Base
Hospital Program in 2006. EMT received official recognition
as a WSIB approved training agency in 1996 and is listed on
the WSIB website. (http://www.wsib.on.ca/wsib/wsibsite.nsf/Public/FAP)
A primary philosophical focus in our First Aid program delivery
is the conviction that experienced prehospital health care
providers bringing real world experience to the classroom
will provide a significant benefit to the students in our
programs. All of our instructors are experienced paramedics
or firefighters who bring personal emergency experience to
the classroom.
To ensure that the education developed and delivered by EMT
instructors is current, medically sound and focused on industrial
and community responders, we have developed a corporate medical
advisory committee. The members of that group include:
- Mr. Andrew Benson, BSc, AEMCA, ACP;
- Mr. James Harris, BA, AEMCA, ACP;
- Rudy Vandersluis, MD, CCFP(EM), FRCPC; and
- Phil Moran, MD, FRCPC, DABEM
Successful participants receive 2 certificates, the first,
an EMT First Aid certificate valid for 3 years. The second,
a Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF) CPR certificate. The HSF
and EMT recommend annual retraining of CPR skills
Course Length:
- Emergency First Aid with adult choking and CPR = 8 hours
- Standard First Aid with adult choking and CPR = 16 hours
We currently offer WSIB approved first aid courses to groups
or organizations who are interested in receiving training
from emergency professionals. We do not currently offer first
aid courses on an individual sign up basis.
If you would like more information about the courses offered
