Community Programs were designed directly from the needs
of the community. These programs focus on delivering educational
services, medical oversight, quality assurance and continuous
quality improvement for the Emergency Medical Responder, First
Responder and the Public Access Defibrillation Program.
Public Access Defibrillation (PAD)
In Durham Region we have a Public Access Defibrillation (PAD)
Program known as the Cardiac Safe Community. This program
is managed by the Central East Prehospital Care Program (CEPCP)
but is supported by:
- Lakeridge Health Corporation
- Durham Region EMS
- Ajax, Clarington, Brock, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Scugog
and Uxrbidge Fire Services
- Ontario Power Generation (OPG)
The municipalities that participate in the program are:
- Clarington (11 sites)
- Oshawa (30 sites)
- Whitby (19 sites)
- Ajax (18 sites)
- Pickering (10 sites)
- Uxbridge (10 sites)
- Scugog (6 sites)
A number of industries and corporations are also partnered
with our Cardiac Safe Community program as either AED response
or PAD programs.
- Ontario Power Generation
-EMR/AED response within both generation facilities
-PAD sites within OPG – 5 sites
- RN/AED response within G.M. Canada
- Oshawa Centre AED response with security staff
The PAD / AED program education is an 8 hour course that encompasses
Adult CPR and the safe use of an AED. This program receives
medical oversight, guidelines, education, continuous support,
event review and critical incident stress management to ensure
best practice.
First Aid Programs
Other community programs include Emergency Medical Training
(EMT) First Aid and CPR courses to various organizations or
groups including Lakeridge Health Corporation and the Durham
District School Board.
